At the beginning of the year, Substack was facing serious backlash for allowing hate speech on their platform. Worse, they were making money from it and they were not going to stop.
I get that we still, for the moment, have Free Speech Rights in this country. But I also believe there is a line when speech goes too far when it emboldens people to hurt others. I watched and read as some writers left the platform while others barely batted an eye. Not wanting to put more gold into the pot, I considered other places to publish. I wrote a couple of ‘this is the end of this blog’ posts but couldn’t send them. I was keeping my fingers crossed that things would change.
Over time, Substack walked back its original stance on the subject. They say they’re clearing out the offending stacks, and are changing their rules of what is acceptable on their platform.
